Macon Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-75 Travelers
Time your drive around rush hour: The I-75/I-16 interchange (exit 165) gets congested weekdays 7-9am and 4:30-6:30pm. The left lanes can bottleneck badly. If possible, pass through mid-morning or early afternoon.
Speed trap alert: The "Macon Dip" I-75 drops from 70 to 55 mph as you enter the city limits (around exit 165). Local and state police actively patrol this zone. Stay alert and slow down before the signs.
Gas up before or after, not in Macon: Prices at Macon exits tend to run 15-30¢ higher per gallon. Fill up in Forsyth (exits 185-187 north) or Perry (exits 134-136 south) for better prices.
Construction heads-up: The I-475 western bypass is often smoother and less congested than going through downtown, especially if there's any incident or construction on the main route through the city.
